A PAINTER'S MOVING TRIBUTE TO THE QUILT
This work is 4' x 8' long, made up of 32 separate 12" abstract paintings that can be moved. Each painting has magnets mounted on the back allowing it to adhere to a base of steel panels attached to the gallery wall. The idea for this installation began out of a bout of frustration and the desire to recycle. Sherman had a handful of full sheet acrylic paintings on paper that had potential, but weren't quite working. She began to cut them up into 4" and 2" squares, began arranging them into larger works. New images began to appear that were different from the original painting, but used the same language of marks. Then Ms. Sherman mounted each painting on a stretched canvas and attached magnets to the back of the canvas.
